Heated Exchange Between Heng Swee Keat and Pritam Singh Over Budget Accountability

The debate intensified when Pritam questioned a S$20 million figure, leading to a back-and-forth with Heng on budget outcomes.

In an intense exchange during the wrap-up of the Budget debate, Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Heng Swee Keat found himself in a skirmish with Workers’ Party (WP) chief and Leader of the Opposition, Pritam Singh. The nearly two-hour-long debate saw tensions rise as Singh challenged a specific figure Heng had mentioned regarding the proposed parliamentary budget office, a key component of WP’s suggestions.

Singh questioned the source of the S$20 million figure, demanding clarification. Heng, in response, asserted that none of the WP MPs had previously raised concerns about the outcomes of the budget during the debate, further fueling the heated discussion. The exchange grew more intense when Indranee Rajah, Leader of the House, also engaged in the debate, creating a multi-party confrontation over the details and accountability of the budget figures presented.

The fiery debate highlighted ongoing tensions between the ruling party and opposition, as both sides clashed over the interpretation and transparency of budgetary matters.
