The iconic duo’s seventh attempt at reproduction comes with a temporary closure of their exhibit to ensure privacy.
It’s that time of year again for Singapore’s beloved giant pandas, Jia Jia and Kai Kai, as they begin their seventh attempt to produce a baby. Wildlife Reserves Singapore (WRS) announced on April 19 that the Panda Forest at River Safari will be closed from April 21 to April 26 to provide the pair with privacy during their mating season.
Jia Jia, a 12-year-old female panda, and Kai Kai, a 13-year-old male, have been living at River Safari since 2012, as part of a ten-year loan agreement with the China Wildlife Conservation Association. The pandas first tried to mate on April 17, 2015, and this marks their seventh attempt to reproduce.
Jia Jia, distinguishable by her black nose, and Kai Kai, known for his pink nose and “onion head,” have become iconic figures in Singapore. Their ongoing efforts to create a cub are a source of excitement for both locals and visitors, symbolizing conservation efforts for the endangered species.
