Benjamin Netanyahu vows to press on with military operations, while Joe Biden expresses support for a ceasefire
Health officials in Gaza have reported that 200 Palestinians, including 59 children, have been killed in the week-long conflict with Israel. The escalating violence has prompted growing international calls for a ceasefire, yet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has indicated that Israel’s military actions will continue in the face of mounting pressure.
Following a conversation with Netanyahu, U.S. President Joe Biden issued his first statement on May 17, expressing support for a ceasefire, although he did not call for immediate cessation of hostilities. Biden reaffirmed Israel’s right to defend itself against rocket attacks and emphasized the importance of protecting innocent civilians. The two leaders also discussed the progress of Israel’s military operations against Hamas and other militant groups in Gaza.
In response to the ongoing conflict, efforts are being made by the U.S. to engage with Egypt and other partners to push for a ceasefire.
