Kind, Gentle Boy’ Who Helped Deliver Food to Needy: Amrin Amin
A tragic incident occurred on June 3, when a 20-year-old man lost his life in a fire caused by his Personal Mobility Device (PMD) in a lift at a housing block in Woodlands, Singapore.
The young man was described as a “kind and gentle boy” by former Member of Parliament (MP) Amrin Amin, who paid tribute to him in a heartfelt Facebook post on June 5. Amrin recalled the teen’s selflessness, noting that he had helped deliver briyani to needy residents in Woodlands during Ramadan for two consecutive years.
Witnesses reported that the fire broke out in the lift around midnight. When the teen ran out of the lift, he was engulfed in flames. A nearby resident, upon hearing the loud sound and the teen’s screams, rushed to his aid and attempted to put out the fire before the Singapore Civil Defence Force arrived. Despite their efforts, the young man suffered severe burns and sadly succumbed to his injuries after being hospitalized.
Neighbours revealed that the teen was preparing for National Service and worked as a food delivery personnel to help support his family. This devastating incident has led to calls for greater caution with non-UL2272-certified PMDs, which are recognized as safety hazards.
The fire also caused extensive damage to the lift and surrounding area, leaving the community in mourning over the loss of such a young life.
