Torrential Rain Leads to Hospital Issues, Road Closures, and Widespread Disruption
Severe thunderstorms on Sunday caused significant flooding in London, with roads and tube stations submerged due to torrential rain. The Environment Agency issued five flood warnings across southern England and 19 flood alerts, including parts of Wales, as the storm wreaked havoc.
In response to the flooding, Barts Health NHS Trust declared a major incident. The heavy rain caused problems at Whipps Cross and Newham Hospitals in East London, disrupting patient care. A statement from the trust urged people to attend alternative hospitals if possible, to ease the pressure on affected facilities while emergency services worked to resolve the situation.
In addition to hospital disruptions, police closed a road in southwest London where three double-decker buses became stuck under a railway bridge. The bus driver reported that passengers had to disembark as water began to flood the vehicle. In Walthamstow, northeast London, motorists abandoned their cars as floodwaters rose, and emergency services were called to rescue residents trapped in waist-deep water in their homes.
The intense storm has caused widespread chaos, and authorities continue to monitor the situation as further flooding alerts remain in place.
