Joseph Schooling, the defending Olympic champion in the 100m butterfly, has failed to secure a spot in the semi-finals at the Tokyo Olympics. The 26-year-old swimmer finished 8th in his heat, clocking a time of 53.12 seconds.
Teammate Quah Zheng Wen had a stronger performance, recording a time of 52.39 seconds and placing 4th in his heat. Schooling ended up 44th in the overall standings, while Quah finished 34th.
There were eight heats in total, with the top 16 swimmers advancing to the semi-finals. Despite a solid performance, Schooling’s time was not enough to keep him in contention for the medal rounds.
