Latvia Enforces Strict COVID-19 Measures; UK Faces Surge in Cases and Deaths

Latvia Imposes School and Venue Closures, While UK Sees Nearly 50,000 New Cases in One Day

As COVID-19 cases continue to rise, Latvia has introduced strict measures, including the closure of schools, restaurants, and entertainment venues for a month. Additionally, a curfew has been enforced to limit further spread of the virus.

In the UK, the situation remains concerning as the country reported 49,156 new COVID-19 cases and 45 deaths on October 18, 2021. The rise in cases has prompted government warnings that the coming months could be particularly challenging in the fight against the pandemic.

Meanwhile, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) reported that two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine offer protection similar to that of natural infection. Across the globe, the European Union has successfully exported over 1 billion vaccine doses.

Russia has also seen a record increase in daily COVID-19 cases, while India’s vaccination campaign faces slowdowns despite a growing vaccine stockpile. These developments highlight the ongoing challenges many countries are facing in managing the pandemic.
