General Milley Highlights China’s Advances in Military Technology
A recent hypersonic missile test by China has raised significant concerns within the United States military, according to General Mark Milley, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. This test involved a nuclear-capable hypersonic weapon that was launched into space, orbited the Earth, and then re-entered the atmosphere before gliding toward a target within China.
Though Milley could not disclose classified information regarding the test, he acknowledged the breakthrough in hypersonic technology, noting that the United States is also working on similar weapons. Milley compared this event to the “Sputnik moment,” a reference to the Soviet Union’s 1957 launch of the first satellite, which marked the beginning of the space race. While he stopped short of calling it an exact “Sputnik moment,” he emphasized the gravity of the technological advancement and how it has captured the attention of US defense leaders.
