Israel to Conduct First-Ever National Covid Drill for New Variant

The war games exercise will simulate a response to a potential ‘Omega’ Covid variant.

Israel is set to hold the world’s first national Covid-19 drill, designed to assess the country’s readiness for the possible emergence of a new, highly lethal variant of the virus. The drill, which will take place on Thursday, will simulate a national emergency response to an “Omega” variant of Covid-19, which has not yet been discovered.

The exercise, led by Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, will follow a war games-style format to evaluate the capabilities of various government departments and national agencies. Although Israel has successfully managed to overcome a fourth wave of Covid, with the Delta variant on the decline, Bennett emphasized the need for continued vigilance. He stressed that the fight against the virus is ongoing and that preparedness remains crucial, with Israel monitoring the global situation closely and preparing for any potential future scenarios.

The drill will be coordinated by Israel’s civil defense minister and aims to strengthen the nation’s ability to react swiftly and effectively to any future outbreak.
