Jack Neo Apologizes for ‘Amanda Man’ Character Name in ‘Ah Girls Go Army’ Movie

The director issues an apology after transgender actress Kelly Kimberly Cheong raised concerns over the controversial character name.

Jack Neo, the director of the upcoming Ah Girls Go Army movie, has issued an apology after facing backlash regarding the naming of a character in the film. The character, played by transgender actress Kelly Kimberly Cheong, was initially named “Amanda Man,” a choice that sparked online criticism.

Ah Girls Go Army is the fifth installment in the Ah Boys To Men franchise, a popular series directed by Neo since 2012. The new film, set in a near future where women must serve national service due to a shortage of men in Singapore, introduces the character of Amanda Man, portrayed by Cheong, a transgender actress and martial arts enthusiast with a significant following on TikTok.

The controversy erupted after the public learned about the character name, prompting Cheong to raise the issue with the director. In response, Neo apologized, acknowledging that the name may have been inappropriate or insensitive. He expressed regret and assured that the character name would be reconsidered.

The incident highlights growing awareness around issues of representation and respect for the transgender community, with many calling for more thoughtful and inclusive portrayals in media.
