Twitter Bans Marjorie Taylor Greene’s Personal Account Over Covid Misinformation

The Georgia congresswoman faces permanent suspension after violating Twitter’s policies on misleading Covid-related posts.

Twitter has permanently suspended the personal account of Georgia Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene for repeatedly violating the platform’s policies regarding Covid misinformation. The suspension came after Greene received her “fourth strike” under Twitter’s policy system, which was implemented in March 2021 to combat harmful posts about the coronavirus.

Twitter’s “strike” system involves progressively harsher penalties for users spreading misinformation about Covid-19. After two or three strikes, accounts face temporary locks; four strikes result in a week-long suspension; and five or more strikes lead to permanent removal. Greene had previously faced temporary suspensions for violating the policy, including one this past summer for claiming vaccines were ineffective.

A Twitter spokesperson confirmed that the suspension was a direct result of repeated violations, emphasizing the platform’s commitment to permanently banning accounts for persistent offenses. Greene’s official congressional account remains active, despite the suspension of her personal account.

The congresswoman, known for her controversial views and statements, has courted attention for endorsing conspiracy theories like QAnon and promoting baseless claims about the 2020 election. Her outspoken support for extremist views has led to condemnation from both sides of the political spectrum, with Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell calling her conspiracy theories a “cancer” for the Republican Party.
