Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro Hospitalized Again Over Intestinal Blockage

Bolsonaro experiences complications from 2018 stabbing, with potential surgery required for abdominal obstruction.

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been hospitalized after experiencing symptoms of an intestinal blockage, a complication related to a stabbing he suffered during his 2018 campaign. Bolsonaro began feeling unwell on Sunday afternoon and was admitted to the hospital early on Monday morning.

On Twitter, Bolsonaro shared an update, stating that more tests would be conducted to assess whether surgery would be necessary to address the obstruction in his abdominal region. He also posted a photo from his hospital bed, giving a thumbs-up.

This marks his second hospitalization for similar symptoms since the 2018 stabbing, which led to a series of emergency surgeries. According to Vila Nova Star hospital in São Paulo, where he was admitted, Bolsonaro is currently in stable condition and is undergoing treatment. His medical team, led by Dr. Antonio Luiz de Vasconcellos Macedo, is set to re-evaluate his condition, though there is no indication yet when he will be discharged.

Bolsonaro had been on vacation in the southern state of Santa Catarina prior to being flown to São Paulo in the early hours of Monday. This is not the first time the president has faced hospitalizations related to his previous injuries. In July 2021, he was also treated for an intestinal blockage, which caused chronic hiccups.

Bolsonaro, who has been in power since 2019, is planning to run for re-election in October 2022.
