Singapore Must Brace for Up to 30 Years of US-China Tensions, Says George Yeo

Former Foreign Minister warns of ongoing geopolitical instability with potential for skirmishes and proxy wars.

Singapore should be mentally prepared for a prolonged period of tension between the United States and China, lasting up to 30 years, according to former foreign minister George Yeo. Speaking on January 11, Yeo, now a visiting scholar at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, emphasized that the intensity of the tensions could fluctuate over time, with the possibility of skirmishes at sea and even proxy wars between the two powers.

Yeo’s comments were made during a curtain-raiser for the annual Singapore Perspectives conference organized by the Institute of Policy Studies. The event, moderated by ambassador-at-large Chan Heng Chee, featured Yeo alongside former URA master planner Liu Thai Ker as panellists.
