Director Reveals Desire for Comedy Awards, Acknowledges His Films Aren’t “Artistic”
Jack Neo, the acclaimed Singaporean director, has been in the spotlight recently due to the ongoing buzz around his film “Ah Girls Go Army”. In a candid appearance on Mediacorp’s talkshow “Hear U Out” hosted by Quan Yi Fong, Neo opened up about his journey and the challenges he has faced throughout his career.
Neo shared a more vulnerable side of himself, admitting that he had once aspired to win the Best Comedy Performer award, a title that has predominantly gone to his protégé, Mark Lee. However, Neo expressed no resentment toward Lee, acknowledging that the award category emerged after his peak years in the industry.
When discussing his films, Neo was surprisingly humble, stating that his movies “don’t contain much artistic value” and that his primary goal is to create films that are easily understood and enjoyed by a wide audience. He explained that he is more focused on telling stories that people can relate to and appreciate in the cinema, rather than striving for artistic recognition.
