Trump Denounces Capitol Attack as ‘Insurrection Hoax’ Ahead of Public Hearings

At a Wyoming rally, Trump intensifies his criticism of Liz Cheney and dismisses January 6 events as false.

As the House committee prepares to begin public hearings on the Capitol attack of January 6, 2021, former president Donald Trump labeled the insurrection as a “hoax.” Speaking at a rally in Wyoming on Saturday night, Trump amplified his attacks on Congresswoman Liz Cheney, who is part of the committee investigating the events. Cheney has been a target of Trump’s ire ever since her vote to impeach him for inciting the attack.

At the rally, Trump referred to Cheney as a key promoter of the “insurrection hoax,” describing her actions as part of a “grotesquely false” and “partisan” narrative. He mocked the term “insurrection” and claimed it was all fabricated, dismissing the violent breach of the Capitol as “crap.”

Trump had been impeached by the House after a violent mob stormed the Capitol in an attempt to halt the certification of Joe Biden’s presidential victory. The former president had urged the crowd to “fight like hell,” leading to accusations that he incited the riot.
