Online Community Rallies to Fulfil His Final Wish Before His Passing
A man battling terminal pancreatic cancer, who reached out online for help in getting his favourite dish, Hokkien mee, has passed away at the age of 45.
Anthony Lee had turned to social media in December last year, asking for recommendations and assistance in obtaining good Hokkien mee, as his condition made it difficult for him to leave his home. His request was met with overwhelming support, with netizens ensuring that he could enjoy the meal he loved.
Sadly, Lee succumbed to his illness on 26 March. A day after his passing, members of the Facebook group where he had shared his journey mourned his loss, with many remembering his resilience and love for food.
One of those who helped him, Liang Guowei, paid tribute in a heartfelt post, commending Lee’s determination to fight on for his wife and daughter. Liang had not only brought him Hokkien mee during his final months but also delivered a serving to his wake as a final gesture of respect.
Lee’s initial post had sparked a wave of kindness, with numerous people offering to bring him different versions of the dish. On Christmas Day, an aspiring chef prepared three home-cooked servings—one for Lee and two for his family—refusing any payment in return. He also received meals from well-known Hokkien mee vendors, cherishing every bite.
Despite his deteriorating health, Lee maintained his love for food, stating that he would eat whatever he could while he still had the chance. In one of his final updates, he acknowledged that his condition had worsened but insisted that small joys, like eating a well-made meal, brought him comfort.
His words, “If not now, when?” resonated deeply with those who followed his journey, a reminder of his outlook on life despite his circumstances.
Lee’s story stands as a testament to the power of community and the simple acts of kindness that can make a difference, even in someone’s final days.
