Prime Minister Wong Announces GE2025 to Address Global Challenges

PM Wong stresses the need for Singaporeans to choose their leaders as the world faces increasing uncertainty.

Prime Minister Lawrence Wong announced on April 15, 2025, that the General Election (GE) 2025 has been called to allow Singaporeans to elect their leaders at a time when the world is experiencing significant uncertainty. In a Facebook post, PM Wong highlighted that Singapore is at a pivotal moment, where global conditions that have historically contributed to the nation’s success are no longer as reliable.

Wong emphasised that the world is undergoing profound changes, with increasing instability, unpredictability, and challenges to the status quo. He explained that one of the key factors driving this shift is the imposition of sweeping tariffs by the United States on its trading partners, including Singapore. This has created a more volatile global environment, which could affect Singapore’s future.

The Prime Minister shared that he had advised President Tharman Shanmugaratnam to dissolve Parliament and issue the Writ of Election earlier that day, facilitating the call for GE2025. Along with this announcement, PM Wong provided images of the signed proclamations from President Tharman.

The election timeline has now been set. Nomination Day, when political parties will present their candidates, will take place on April 23, 2025, a Wednesday. Polling Day will be held on May 3, 2025, a Saturday, and will be a public holiday if there is more than one candidate or group standing for election. The day before Polling Day, May 2, 2025, will be Cooling-Off Day, a period to allow voters to reflect before casting their ballots.
