“Ministers face intense scrutiny after the boy, a recent Afghan refugee, fell from a ninth-floor hotel window in Sheffield.”
The five-year-old boy who tragically died after falling from the ninth floor of the Metropolitan Hotel in Sheffield has been named as Mohammed Munib Majeedi. His family had recently fled the Taliban and arrived in the UK as part of the ongoing Afghan refugee resettlement efforts.
Mohammed’s family was temporarily housed at the budget hotel, which was offering rooms at £33 a night for refugees. Eyewitnesses recount hearing the mother’s heart-wrenching screams after the fall, which occurred on Wednesday afternoon. The boy’s father had worked as an interpreter for the British Embassy in Kabul.
Authorities are now facing tough questions about the safety of temporary accommodation provided for Afghan refugees, with growing concerns about the conditions and the tragic incident raising serious questions about the hotel’s facilities. South Yorkshire Police have launched an investigation into the incident.
