At Least 200 Dead in Darfur After Deadly Attacks by Janjaweed Militia

Indiscriminate Assaults by Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces Blamed for Mass Casualties in Kreinik and El Geneina

At least 200 people have died following violent attacks on civilians and local forces in West Darfur, Sudan, with witnesses attributing the deadly assaults to the notorious Janjaweed militia, which is now largely integrated into the Sudanese government’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The violence erupted in the city of Kreinik on Sunday, followed by more clashes in the regional capital of El Geneina, as rival groups fight over dwindling resources like water and grazing land, worsened by the ongoing climate crisis. Eyewitnesses described seeing planes fly low before an onslaught of around 150 RSF pickup trucks carrying gunmen. Medical sources confirmed that hospitals in the region have been overwhelmed with casualties, and the death toll is expected to rise as many victims remain untreated. The violence is part of an ongoing escalation of conflict in the region, where tensions have been simmering for months.
