Biden Ends US Support for Saudi-Led Offensive in Yemen

New Foreign Policy Approach Focuses on Diplomacy and Humanitarian Efforts

In a significant shift in US foreign policy, President Joe Biden announced the end of American support for Saudi-led offensive operations in Yemen. During his first major foreign policy speech at the State Department, Biden emphasized the urgent need to end the devastating war that has resulted in over 100,000 deaths and displaced millions.

“This war has to end,” Biden declared, confirming that the US would halt relevant arms sales and military assistance for offensive operations. However, he assured continued support for Saudi Arabia’s defense against missile and drone attacks from Iranian-backed forces, as well as ongoing US counterterrorism efforts against al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula.

The president also reaffirmed his commitment to restoring America’s moral leadership by expanding the US refugee program. He signed an executive order raising the refugee admissions cap to 125,000, significantly increasing the number from fewer than 15,000 under the Trump administration.

Biden’s remarks signaled a broader diplomatic reset, stating that “America is back” and underscoring a firm stance against adversaries like Russia. His administration aims to place diplomacy at the core of US foreign policy, reversing several of the previous administration’s positions.
