Biden Unveils Bold Plan to Halve US Emissions by 2030 to Tackle Climate Crisis

In his Earth Day address, the US President urges global action to combat dangerous global warming, emphasizing the urgency of the moment.

On Earth Day 2021, President Joe Biden presented a groundbreaking commitment to reduce US greenhouse gas emissions by 50% to 52% by 2030, compared to 2005 levels. Speaking at a virtual summit with over 40 world leaders, Biden stressed that addressing the climate emergency is crucial for the future, calling it “the existential crisis of our time.”

Biden emphasized the urgency of the issue, noting that time is running out to prevent catastrophic global heating. He called for other countries, especially those representing the largest economies, to take more decisive steps toward reducing emissions.

In his speech, the President highlighted that the shift to clean energy will not only combat climate change but will also create millions of high-paying union jobs, benefiting economies worldwide. “This is not just a moral imperative, but an economic one,” he said, framing the climate crisis as both a perilous challenge and a moment filled with opportunities. He expressed confidence that the world can rise to the challenge, stating, “Time is short, but I believe we can and will do this.”

In addition to emissions reductions, Biden announced plans to double US funding for developing nations facing severe climate impacts, including droughts and floods, further solidifying the US’s commitment to global climate action.
