Caution Amid Declining Covid Cases and Rising Hospitalizations

Despite a fall in infections, experts remain cautious as hospital admissions increase.

In the UK, Covid-19 cases have dropped significantly, reaching their lowest levels in three weeks with 24,950 confirmed cases. However, both Downing Street and scientists are urging caution. Experts highlight that the full impact of the 19 July easing of restrictions has yet to be seen in the case numbers.

Alongside the fall in cases, hospitalizations have risen, with more than 5,000 Covid-19 patients currently in hospitals in England – the first time this number has been seen since mid-March. In the past week, the seven-day average for hospital admissions has risen by 26%, and hospital bed occupancy has also increased. This raises questions about whether the epidemic is truly subsiding.
