Beijing Criticizes BBC’s Coverage of Xinjiang as Hong Kong Follows Suit
China has officially banned BBC World News from airing within the country, citing the broadcaster’s coverage of China, especially its reporting on Xinjiang. This move comes one week after Beijing warned of retaliation for the revocation of the British broadcasting licence for China’s state-owned network, CGTN, by UK regulators.
In a statement released by China’s National Radio and Television Administration (NRTA), the BBC was accused of violating news reporting requirements by presenting biased coverage that harmed China’s national interests and ethnic unity. The move was mirrored by Hong Kong’s public broadcaster, RTHK, which also ceased relaying BBC World News broadcasts.
In response, the BBC expressed disappointment at China’s decision, emphasizing its role as the world’s most trusted international news broadcaster, committed to impartial and fair reporting on global issues.
