Chinese Aircraft Enter Taiwan’s Defense Zone Amid Rising Tensions

Provocative military maneuvers prompt Biden’s first statement on U.S.-Taiwan relations.

Chinese military aircraft entered Taiwan’s air defense identification zone (ADIZ) for the second consecutive day on Sunday, escalating tensions in the region. Taiwan reported that 15 Chinese warplanes, including fighters and bombers, penetrated its defense zone a day after 12 aircraft, including eight nuclear-capable H-6K bombers, flew near the Pratas Islands in the South China Sea.

China considers Taiwan a breakaway province and has intensified military activity around the island in recent weeks. The escalation comes after the outgoing Trump administration approved significant arms deals with Taiwan and loosened restrictions on U.S. interactions with Taiwanese officials.

The Biden administration responded with its first public remarks on the U.S.-Taiwan relationship, signaling continued support for the democratically governed island. These developments underscore heightened tensions in the Taiwan Strait as both sides navigate a precarious geopolitical situation.
