Yao Pan Ma succumbed to his injuries after being attacked in East Harlem in April 2021.
Yao Pan Ma, a 61-year-old Chinese immigrant who had only moved to the United States in October 2018, tragically passed away on December 31, 2021, eight months after being the victim of a brutal and random attack in New York City. Ma, who was collecting cans in East Harlem when he was attacked, succumbed to his injuries on New Year’s Eve, according to police reports.
The assault took place in April 2021, and Jarrod Powell, 49, of New York City, had been previously charged with attempted murder, felony assault, and hate crime offenses in connection with the attack. The case, which remains under investigation, has now been reclassified as a homicide following Ma’s death.
Authorities confirmed the victim’s name as Yao Pan Ma, with “Ma” being the surname, and the case has drawn attention due to its brutal and senseless nature.
