The Multi-Ministry Taskforce investigates the large, unregulated crowd that gathered on New Year’s Eve, violating safe management rules.
The Multi-Ministry Taskforce (MTF) has labeled the large New Year’s Eve gathering at Clarke Quay as a potential superspreading event, citing blatant violations of safe management measures. Hundreds of people were seen gathering in front of Riverside Point on December 31, 2021, to count down to the new year. Videos circulating online showed crowded scenes, with many attendees not wearing masks or pulling them down, despite regulations.
The MTF stressed that such gatherings are in direct breach of the current rules, which allow a maximum of five people per social gathering in Singapore. In many countries, similar events were either canceled or restricted this year due to Covid-19 concerns, highlighting the importance of adhering to safety measures.
The Taskforce confirmed that enforcement agencies are investigating the incident, with a strong reminder for the public to continue exercising civic responsibility. Despite the desire to celebrate after two years of social restrictions, the MTF emphasized that the pandemic is ongoing, and safety measures must be followed to avoid further spread of the virus.
