A man was killed in Acapulco as buildings were damaged and boulders fell onto roads, with the quake also felt in Mexico City.

A powerful 7.0-magnitude earthquake has hit southwestern Mexico, near the popular beach resort of Acapulco, causing significant damage and claiming at least one life. A man was tragically killed when a falling post struck him, and the earthquake also led to rockslides and structural damage in the area.

The earthquake, which struck early Wednesday morning, occurred 11 miles (18 km) northeast of Acapulco in the Guerrero region. The tremor caused widespread panic, with residents rushing into the streets for safety as the quake rattled the region. Large boulders tumbled onto roads, and trees were uprooted, further complicating the aftermath.

Sergio Flores, a local resident of Acapulco, described the frightening moments following the quake: “We heard loud noise from the building, noise from the windows, things fell inside the house, the power went out. We heard leaking water, the pool water drained, and people were screaming, very nervous.”

The US Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the quake was particularly shallow, with its epicenter just 7.8 miles (12.5 km) below the Earth’s surface, amplifying its destructive power.
