23-Year-Old Claims He Was Distressed Over Leaving Friends, Cites His Behaviour as ‘Stupid’
A 23-year-old Indonesian passenger, Brilliant Angjaya, was sentenced to three weeks in jail after admitting to exposing himself to a Singapore Airlines stewardess during a flight from China to Singapore on January 23, 2025. Angjaya, who had consumed two glasses of champagne before the incident, recorded the act with his mobile phone, capturing the stewardess’s shocked reaction.
District Judge Paul Quan described Angjaya’s actions as “inexplicable” and “inexcusable,” adding that his behaviour was highly inappropriate. The court was informed that after eating and drinking on board, Angjaya went to sleep. Upon waking, he visited the toilet and decided to record a video of himself exposing his genitals, later returning to his seat to continue the indecent act.
When the stewardess approached him with his meal, she was taken aback by the sight of his exposed genitals. Realising that Angjaya was recording the incident, she promptly reported it to her supervisor. Initially denying the accusation, Angjaya later handed over his phone, which revealed video footage of the event.
The police were notified, and Angjaya was arrested before the plane landed. His lawyer, Navin Thevar, explained that Angjaya was in a “troubled state” due to leaving China and feeling uncertain about when he would reunite with friends, attributing his actions to this emotional turmoil. In his apology letter, Angjaya admitted his behaviour was “stupid” and apologised to the stewardess, stating that he would face the consequences of his actions.
The Deputy Public Prosecutor had sought a sentence of four to six weeks, noting the aggravating factors of the incident occurring on a plane and the distress caused to the victim, who was in close proximity to passengers. Judge Quan, while recognising Angjaya’s remorse, emphasised the severity of the act, which he considered far beyond a mere prank.
