The Kharg, an Iranian navy support ship, caught fire and sank in the Strait of Hormuz after a blaze that lasted 18 hours, sparking investigations.
Iranian authorities are investigating the cause of a fire that led to the sinking of the Kharg, the Iranian navy’s largest support vessel, in the Gulf of Oman. The ship went down in the Strait of Hormuz shortly after dawn on Wednesday, following an 18-hour fire that started in its boiler room. Despite the damage, all crew members survived the incident.
Images from drones and satellites captured the ship fully engulfed in flames, with survivors seen in lifejackets aboard nearby rescue ships. The sinking of the Kharg is the latest in a series of incidents involving Iranian vessels, following the April damage to the Iranian freighter Saviz, which was targeted by Israeli mines while stationed off the coast of Yemen. The cause of the fire on the Kharg remains under investigation by military officials.
