Monitor Lizard Attacks Pig-Nosed Turtle in Front of Black Swan at Singapore Botanic Gardens

A surprising encounter at Eco Lake, with otters making an unexpected appearance.

On the morning of September 12, Jared Tan set out to capture images of diving kingfishers at Singapore Botanic Gardens but instead witnessed an extraordinary scene. While at Eco Lake, Tan stumbled upon a giant monitor lizard attacking a pig-nosed turtle, its neck in the lizard’s grip. The turtle had been overturned on the lake’s edge, and the graphic sight left an indelible impression on Tan, who managed to photograph the dramatic moment.

The photos captured the predator-prey interaction in detail, though viewers are warned of the graphic nature of the images. Along with the intense moment, the scene also featured an unexpected guest appearance— a group of otters, adding a surprising twist to the encounter. This unusual spectacle in the Botanic Gardens was a rare and wild moment, as nature unfolded in its most raw form before Tan’s lens.
