Diplomats Warn Military That ‘The World Is Watching’ Amid Crackdown on Pro-Democracy Protests
Myanmar experienced a nationwide internet blackout overnight on Sunday, just hours after armored vehicles were deployed in several cities, raising concerns over a possible escalation in the military’s crackdown on pro-democracy protests.
Military vehicles were seen patrolling the streets of Yangon, Myitkyina, and Sittwe, marking the most significant show of force since the February 1 coup. The U.S. embassy in Myanmar issued a warning about reported “military movements” in Yangon and anticipated disruptions to internet services.
By 1:30 AM, internet-monitoring service Netblocks reported that the country’s internet connectivity had dropped to just 14% of normal levels, making communication via email and messaging apps nearly impossible. As global concern grows, diplomats have cautioned Myanmar’s military leaders that their actions are being closely watched.
