Advisory Period for Returning Trays and Crockery Will Begin in June 2021
A new initiative in Singapore to encourage diners to return their trays and crockery after meals at hawker centres was set to begin, but its implementation has been postponed due to the ongoing pandemic. Announced by the National Environment Agency (NEA) in May 2021, the mandatory tray-return initiative was scheduled to start in June 2021. However, with the restrictions under Phase 2 (Heightened Alert) still in effect, this plan has been delayed.
Instead, diners will be given an advisory period from June 1 to August 31, 2021, to return their trays and clean up their tables. While there will be no enforcement of penalties during this time, Safe Distancing Ambassadors and other personnel will be present to remind people to clear their trays, dispose of trash, and maintain cleanliness. The new policy aligns with existing littering regulations under the Environmental Public Health Act.
The initiative was expected to be a step toward a cleaner and more responsible dining culture in Singapore, but for now, it will remain a voluntary practice, with further enforcement measures to be introduced once the advisory period ends.
