Dean of FASS Calls for Civil, Respectful Debate Amid Personal Attacks on Student
The Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) at the National University of Singapore (NUS) has come to the defense of undergraduate Dana Teoh, who faced “cyberbullying” and “personal attacks” following the publication of her commentary in Today over the weekend. In a Facebook post on March 16, Dean Robbie Goh addressed the situation and called for respect in academic discourse.
Teoh’s commentary, which sparked polarized reactions, discussed concerns over cancel culture and its implications. Goh emphasized the importance of fostering a “safe and conducive environment” for intellectual debate, urging that discussions, especially those with differing views, be carried out in a “civil and respectful manner.”
He urged individuals to refrain from personal attacks against Teoh, underscoring that the university remains committed to creating a supportive atmosphere for its students. Goh also praised the Department of Communications and New Media for its efforts in educating students about fostering balanced and fair discussions.
The university’s message highlights the need for civility in public discourse, particularly when engaging with controversial or differing viewpoints.
