Overcoming Schizophrenia: Amy Kang’s Journey to Success with the Help of a Supportive Community

How Amy Kang, a GrabFood Rider, Found Strength and Stability Through Her ‘Gang’ of Fellow Riders

At the age of 19, Amy Kang experienced her first schizophrenic episode, a terrifying moment where voices whispered into her ear, urging her to throw a potted plant off a school building. Without understanding why, she obeyed, unknowingly taking the first step into a challenging battle with schizophrenia. Schizophrenia, a serious mental disorder involving hallucinations and disordered thinking, is often most prevalent during adolescence or early adulthood.

Kang’s life was marked by several episodes of emotional turmoil, including a disturbing incident at a school camp where she lost control of her emotions after being provoked. In a state of confusion and distress, she ran through the courtyard, shouting at people she perceived as being “crazy.” Her outbursts led to her early departure from the camp and caused further strain on her family. In the weeks that followed, her family struggled to manage her episodes, even resorting to extreme measures like tying her to a chair to prevent further outbursts.

However, despite the hardships, Amy has found stability in an unexpected place. Now a GrabFood rider at the age of 46, she thrives due to the support of a close-knit group of fellow riders. This ‘gang,’ as she fondly refers to them, has provided a safe and understanding environment where she feels accepted, even during her most challenging moments. The camaraderie and mutual support from her colleagues have been essential to her journey toward managing her schizophrenia.

Once, she struggled to maintain a job due to her condition, but now, Amy has found a purpose and community through her work, where she can support herself while being supported by others. Her story is a testament to the power of a strong support system, showing that, despite the challenges schizophrenia brings, with the right people by your side, you can thrive.
