Petition Launched to Save Man with Intellectual Disability from Death Penalty in Singapore

Nagaenthran A/L K Dharmalingam faces execution for heroin trafficking, despite claims of intellectual disability

A petition has been initiated to prevent the execution of Nagaenthran A/L K Dharmalingam, a man with a mild intellectual disability, who is scheduled to be executed in Singapore on November 10, 2021. Nagaenthran was sentenced to death after being convicted of trafficking 42.72 grams of heroin into the country.

As of now, the petition has garnered over 40,000 signatures, advocating for clemency based on his mental health condition. A forensic psychiatric evaluation revealed that Nagaenthran has an IQ of 69, which is below the threshold of 70, often used to diagnose intellectual disability.

However, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has responded by stating that both the High Court and the Court of Appeal found that Nagaenthran had a clear understanding of the nature of his actions and had not lost his sense of judgment regarding the morality of his offense. The MHA emphasized that the death penalty should be upheld, despite claims regarding his intellectual disability.
