Homeowners share their nightmare experiences of shoddy workmanship, delayed projects, and swindling contractors.
Renovating a home is supposed to be a dream come true, transforming a simple space into a personalized sanctuary. However, for some homeowners, the renovation journey becomes a nightmare, marked by delays, poor-quality work, and unscrupulous contractors. Mothership spoke to several victims who lost significant sums of money and dealt with constant frustration as their renovation projects turned disastrous.
One such victim, Leong, shared his harrowing experience with a renovation company after he sought to furnish his new Build-To-Order (BTO) flat. In 2018, Leong took out a S$42,000 loan from the bank to fund the renovation, with two cheques issued directly to the renovation company. This arrangement, while initially convenient, would become a source of regret. Leong later reflected that had the bank issued the cheques to him directly, he could have had better control over payments and the cash flow.
The renovation project began quickly, with work progressing well during the first two weeks. However, once the initial payment was received, the contractor insisted on a second payment with the promise that the renovation would be completed in less than two weeks. Eager to see the project finished, Leong authorized the second payment without hesitation, trusting the company due to positive recommendations from a friend.
But after the second payment, everything fell apart. The subcontractors who were supposed to complete the work “ran away,” leaving Leong without any progress or clear communication. The contractor became unresponsive, and the renovation remained incomplete. Leong was left struggling to recoup his losses and find a way to complete his home.
Leong’s case is part of a growing trend where homeowners are swindled by dishonest contractors. The victims often face endless excuses for delays, unfulfilled promises, and contractors who disappear without completing the work. With upfront payments already made, many homeowners find themselves helpless, unable to get their money back or even finish their projects.
This experience serves as a cautionary tale for others considering home renovations. Homeowners are advised to avoid paying large sums upfront, thoroughly vet contractors, and ensure clear written contracts are in place before starting any work.
