House select committee expands probe into the planning and financing of the January 6 rally.
The House select committee investigating the January 6 Capitol attack has issued subpoenas to five individuals linked to Donald Trump, including political operatives Roger Stone and far-right media personality Alex Jones. The subpoenas are part of a broader effort to investigate the planning and financing of the “Save America” rally that preceded the violent insurrection.
The panel is specifically targeting individuals with connections to the Trump White House in its quest to understand who organized, financed, and coordinated the rally at the Ellipse, as well as the communications between rally organizers and officials in the White House and Congress. Among those subpoenaed are Trump spokesperson Taylor Budowich, pro-Trump activists Dustin Stockton and Jennifer Lawrence, alongside Stone and Jones.
House select committee chairman Bennie Thompson emphasized that the subpoenas were aimed at uncovering the key figures involved in the rally and understanding the connections to the Capitol attack. The committee’s interest in Stone centers on his planned role in leading the march from the rally to the Capitol, a march he ultimately did not participate in. Investigators are also probing Stone’s links to the Oath Keepers, a militia group that provided him with private security before several members participated in the attack on the Capitol.
Stone was also present at the Willard hotel in Washington, DC, on January 5, 2021, where Trump’s associates strategized about ways to overturn the results of the 2020 election during the joint session of Congress. In Jones’ case, Thompson noted that, despite being invited to lead the march, he also did not participate, raising further questions about his role in the events surrounding the Capitol attack.
