Lavrov Warns of Nuclear Risks Amid US-hosted Talks on Ukraine’s Critical Phase
Russia’s Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, has accused NATO of conducting a “proxy war” by providing military assistance to Ukraine in its ongoing conflict with Russia. Lavrov’s comments come as defence ministers from various nations convened in Germany for a US-hosted summit focused on supporting Ukraine during what one US general referred to as a “very critical” phase of the war.
Lavrov stated that NATO was essentially at war with Russia through its support of Ukraine, claiming, “War means war.” He further emphasized the growing risks of nuclear conflict, which he described as “considerable.” This assertion was quickly dismissed by Ukraine’s Foreign Minister, Dmytro Kuleba, who argued that Lavrov’s remarks were an attempt to deter global support for Ukraine, highlighting Russia’s failure to intimidate the international community into backing down.
As Moscow’s conventional forces continue to struggle in Ukraine, the focus on nuclear threats has intensified, raising concerns among Western officials regarding the potential for escalation in the conflict.
