Russia Warns of Potential Military Deployments to Cuba and Venezuela Amid Stalled Talks

Diplomatic discussions with the West falter as tensions rise over Ukraine and European security.

As talks between Russia and the West show no signs of progress, Moscow has issued a stark warning, suggesting that military deployments to Cuba and Venezuela could be considered if negotiations over European security and Ukraine fail. Sergei Ryabkov, Russia’s deputy foreign minister, refused to rule out such actions, indicating that it would depend on the response from the United States.

Diplomatic talks, which have spanned the week, seem to have reached an impasse, with no clear breakthroughs. Russia’s aggression has been further compounded by intelligence from the U.S. warning that Russia could fabricate claims of an imminent Ukrainian attack to justify an invasion. U.S. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan warned that Russia’s tactics were reminiscent of its actions in 2014, prior to the annexation of Crimea.

With threats of military escalation and heightened diplomatic tensions, the situation remains dire, and there are growing concerns about the risk of conflict as the West and Russia remain at an impasse.
