“Police Probe Ongoing for Promoting Racial Enmity Following Controversial Tweets”
A 27-year-old Singaporean woman is under investigation by the police for allegedly posting offensive tweets targeting the Malay community. The woman, identified as ‘Matilda Lee’ on Twitter, is being investigated for promoting racial enmity, following a complaint filed on August 29 regarding the content she shared online.
According to the police, the offensive posts were made in response to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong’s National Day Rally speech. The tweets, which have since been deleted, included derogatory remarks, such as questioning the necessity of speaking Malay and making inflammatory comments about the Malay community.
The offence of promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of race, as per Section 298A of the Penal Code, can lead to a fine, imprisonment for up to three years, or both. Investigations are still ongoing.
