A Heartwarming Bond That Endured Decades — Until One of Them Passed Away
Friendships are precious, but few last as long or go through as much as the one between two Singaporeans who were best friends for over six decades. Their bond, which began in their teenage years, remained strong even into their 80s, despite the inevitable challenges life threw their way.
The remarkable story of Bibi Mohinder Kaur Dalamnangal and Oh Swee Kim was shared by Heerea Rikhraj, Bibi’s granddaughter, in the Subtle Asian Traits Facebook group. The duo met as teenagers at a school near Queen Street and Middle Road, where they were known as “troublemakers” for their mischievous antics. One memorable episode involved Bibi helping a friend write a love letter, which accidentally led to Oh being blamed for it.
As they grew up, their friendship endured, with Oh even making Bibi her bridesmaid at her wedding, a gesture that stood out in Oh’s family where bridesmaids were not traditionally included. Over time, as life took them in different directions and they started families, the two women lost touch briefly. However, fate brought them back together when their daughters unknowingly became classmates.
The real reunion happened 15 years ago after Oh’s husband passed away. Feeling the absence of her closest friend, Oh sought out Bibi, though she missed her initially since Bibi had gone to visit family in Canada. When they finally reunited, they became inseparable. They spent their days together, often driving around Singapore, laughing, and sharing in life’s simple pleasures.
Sadly, Bibi passed away in November 2021 at the age of 88, and the loss left a deep impact on Oh. Heerea, Bibi’s granddaughter, reflected on the deep bond she witnessed between the two, noting that their friendship was a model of love, respect, and unwavering support. For Heerea, their enduring friendship was an inspiration, showing the power of companionship and the beauty of inter-racial relationships.
Heerea hopes that, in some way, Bibi and Oh’s connection will continue to endure even after Bibi’s passing.
