Sports Organizations to Boycott Social Media Over Online Abuse During Bank Holiday Weekend

Premier League, EFL, and other sports bodies demand action from social media companies to address hate and discrimination.

Several leading sports bodies, including the Premier League, English Football League (EFL), and anti-racism campaign Kick It Out, have announced an 81-hour social media boycott starting on Friday afternoon. The boycott, which will run until the end of Monday, is aimed at pressuring platforms like Facebook and Twitter to take stronger action against online abuse and discrimination.

These organizations are calling for social media companies to introduce measures such as displaying warnings for users posting abusive messages and requiring personal data before sending such content. They also demand that social media giants submit quarterly reports outlining their efforts to combat online hate.

The boycott, originally initiated by football clubs, players, and the Football Association, has now been joined by other sports bodies, including the England and Wales Cricket Board, Premiership Rugby, and the Lawn Tennis Association. Lewis Hamilton also voiced his support for the campaign, as did Guardian Sport and Sky Sports.
