No Deaths or Serious Injuries Reported as Tropical Storm Claudette Hits Southern U.S.
Authorities in Alabama reported significant damage after a suspected tornado, likely spawned by Tropical Storm Claudette, hit the region, destroying or severely damaging at least 50 homes in a small town near the Florida border. Brewton and East Brewton, located around 48 miles north of Pensacola, Florida, bore the brunt of the damage, with mobile homes in particular being severely affected.
Sheriff Heath Jackson of Escambia County noted that the storm “pretty much leveled” a mobile home park, uprooted trees that landed on houses, and even ripped off the roof of a high school gym. Fortunately, no serious injuries or fatalities were reported.
Photographs from the area shared on social media depicted toppled trees, debris from damaged trailers, and the destruction left in the wake of the tornado. The storm’s impact was also felt across the Florida border, where winds reached speeds of 85mph, overturning an 18-wheel truck.
Tropical Storm Claudette has also caused flooding and heavy rain in parts of Louisiana and Mississippi, disrupting Juneteenth and Father’s Day plans for many in the region, already battered by the remnants of previous hurricane seasons.
