Tornado Devastates Czech Republic, Leaving Five Dead and Hundreds Injured

Destruction from Powerful Storm Hits South Moravia, with Damages to Buildings, Cars, and a Historic Castle

A catastrophic tornado struck the Czech Republic’s south-east on Thursday night, killing at least five people and injuring over a hundred others. The storm, accompanied by hailstones as large as tennis balls, caused widespread devastation in the region.

Social media footage from the affected area showed buildings flattened, overturned cars and buses, severed tree stumps, and numerous fires with thick black smoke. The South Moravia regional governor, Jan Grolich, expressed his shock, calling the scene “living hell.”

In the village of Hrušky, the mayor reported that half of the village had been destroyed. The storm also severely damaged a UNESCO-listed baroque castle in the town of Valtice, part of the Lednice-Valtice cultural landscape. Rescue workers noted that many homes in the area would likely need to be rebuilt from the ground up.
