Hundreds Dead and Over 800,000 Flee as Russian Assault on Residential Areas Intensifies
Ukraine is grappling with a worsening humanitarian crisis, with relentless Russian missile strikes on residential areas causing hundreds of civilian deaths and forcing more than 800,000 people to flee the country. As Moscow continues its campaign, global condemnation has mounted, and health experts are sounding the alarm over deteriorating conditions.
The World Health Organization (WHO) warned that health supplies are rapidly running low, and service provisions have been shifted to makeshift shelters in basements. Jarno Hubicht, WHO’s representative in Ukraine, expressed grave concern, noting the increasing risks to electricity, oxygen supplies, and medicines. WHO’s director-general, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, confirmed reports of attacks on healthcare facilities, which violate international humanitarian law.
As the crisis deepens, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russia of trying to “erase” Ukraine. Meanwhile, the United Nations General Assembly condemned Russia’s invasion, calling for the immediate withdrawal of Russian forces. Ukraine’s ambassador to the UN, Sergiy Kyslytsya, drew a chilling comparison between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Adolf Hitler, emphasizing that the invasion seeks to strip Ukraine of its very existence.
