Xi and Putin Urge NATO to Halt Expansion Amid Growing Tensions Over Ukraine

China and Russia Strengthen Ties in Pre-Olympic Meeting, Criticize Western Policies

In a joint statement signed by Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin, both leaders called for the West to “abandon the ideologized approaches of the Cold War” as tensions over Ukraine continue to rise. The statement, made during the Winter Olympics in Beijing, highlights the strengthening ties between China and Russia, emphasizing that their bilateral relationship has “no limits,” with “no ‘forbidden’ areas of cooperation.”

Xi and Putin urged NATO to rule out any further expansion into Eastern Europe and criticized the formation of security blocs in the Asia-Pacific region, including the Aukus security pact between the US, UK, and Australia. The statement further revealed the leaders’ shared concerns about “color revolutions” and external interference, vowing to deepen strategic cooperation.

This meeting marks the 38th encounter between the two leaders since 2013 and is seen as a demonstration of how China and Russia are increasingly aligning against Western powers, with both nations sharing mutual interests in opposing NATO and Western influence in their respective regions.
